Cancer and its treatment can produce substantial changes in physical appearance and bodily functioning. Surgical scars, mastectomy, amputation, colostomy, hair loss, weight changes, and other treatment-related effects may influence body image and self-esteem. Patients may experience feelings of embarrassment, reduced attractiveness, loss of confidence, or discomfort with their changed appearance. Such concerns may affect clothing choices, social participation, relationships, photographs, and intimate interactions. Psycho-oncological counselling provides a safe and respectful setting in which patients can explore their feelings and develop healthier ways of relating to their changed body. The counselling process supports gradual acceptance while recognising that adjustment may take time. Patients can be encouraged to recognise their identity, strengths, values, relationships, and personal qualities beyond physical appearance. Psychological support may also address confidence in social settings, communication with partners, and adjustment to changes in appearance. The emphasis is on developing a broader and more balanced understanding of self-worth rather than focusing solely on physical characteristics. Patients can gradually develop greater confidence and emotional acceptance as they adapt to treatment-related changes. The overall aim is to strengthen self-esteem, dignity, body acceptance, and psychosocial wellbeing.
